What is Individual Counselling

Individual counselling is a private, one-on-one process where you work with a registered therapist or counsellor to work through life's challenges in a safe, judgment-free space. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, grief, relationship issues, or simply feeling stuck, individual counselling gives you the dedicated time and support to better understand yourself and start feeling better.

How Does Individual Counselling Work?

Each session is typically 50–60 minutes and is tailored entirely to you. Your counsellor will listen, ask thoughtful questions, and use evidence-based approaches — such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based therapy, or solution-focused techniques — to help you build coping skills, shift unhelpful patterns, and move toward the life you want. There's no pressure to share more than you're ready for, and sessions move at your pace.

Is Individual Counselling Covered by Insurance in Alberta?

Many extended health benefits plans in Alberta cover individual counselling sessions with a registered psychologist or registered counsellor. We recommend checking with your provider to confirm your coverage before booking.

Who Is Individual Counselling For?

Individual counselling is for anyone who feels they could benefit from professional support. You don't need to be in crisis to reach out. Many people in Calgary, Edmonton, Airdrie, Red Deer, and across Alberta come to counselling simply because they want to feel more like themselves again.

How Can We Help?

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is a normal phenomenon designed to protect you when you are in danger. However, anxiety disorders are different in that a fear response is triggered even though there is no real danger present. Therapy helps treat generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, performance anxiety, test anxiety, panic disorder and phobias.

Anger Management

Anger is a natural response to threatening situations, but it becomes a problem when the anger is uncontrollable and begins to affect your relationships, careers, and overall well being. Learn a variety of anger management and calming techniques to help you manage your feelings, thoughts, and reactions to unpleasant situations.

ADHD

ADHD is a developmental condition that presents itself in early childhood and is characterized by issues with inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Counselling can help those with ADHD by developing healthy and structured coping strategies to manage internal systems and reduce the impact ADHD has on their lives.

Childhood Trauma

Childhood trauma includes emotional, physical, sexual, developmental, medical, or attachment trauma that was experienced by a person as a child. Counselling can help adults process and accept what happened to them while also providing helpful strategies to challenge unhealthy beliefs and replace them with empowering thoughts.

Decision Making

Having difficulties with decision making can be linked to low self esteem, perfectionism, procrastination, and a deep fear about making a mistake. Counselling can help you rethink the thoughts and fears that prevent you from making a decision by recognizing the underlying problem and providing techniques to help simplify the process.

depression

Depression

Depression is a common mental health concern that can cause a person to experience feelings of sadness, worthlessness, loneliness and hopelessness. Counselling can help you recognize what is causing your depression, develop effective coping skills and nurture more positive self talk.

Gender and Sexuality

As a society, people expect children to conform to certain set of rules regarding gender and sexuality. This makes embracing oneself more difficult. Counselling provides empowering strategies and techniques to help people accept themselves, cope with discrimination and be their authentic self.

Grief and Loss

Grieving the loss of a loved one, a career, a family pet, or even financial security can be a difficult and often lonely process. We are here for you to be a compassionate and supportive shoulder as you move through the stages of grief to process, accept, heal, and move on from the loss.

OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition characterized by recurring, intrusive, and obsessive thoughts and the urge to engage in specific behaviours or compulsions. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP) are effective approaches to treating OCD.

Emotional Regulation

Emotional regulation is the ability to control one’s own emotion state. Counselling helps individuals rethink how they react to challenging situations thereby reducing anxiety, stress, anger, and sadness while encouraging them to focus on staying positive, confident, and resilient.

Personal Development

Personal development is a lifelong process that focuses on learning new skills and techniques to function better mentally, emotionally, physically and socially. By finding ways to improve yourself, you can learn to become a better parent, spouse, friend, worker, and overall a better person.

Self Esteem

Self-esteem is about how you feel about yourself, your abilities, and your difficulties. When you have a healthy self-esteem, you feel confident, unfazed by others and deserving of respect. Counselling can help by encouraging individuals to recognize their worth, build up their self esteem, and start believing in themselves.

Stress and Burnout

Stress is a normal response to challenging situations. Everyone experiences some stress in their lives; however, if a person lives with persistent, long-term stress, it can lead to burn out and chronic health issues. Counselling can help you manage stress with relaxation techniques and improved time management skills.

Sleep Issues

Sleep problems such as sleeping too little or too much, or not being able to fall asleep at all are often associated with other mental health issues such as anxiety, stress, depression or trauma. Therapy can help by addressing the underlying problem while also providing effective techniques to help you manage your sleep habits.

Relationship Issues

The relationships in our lives are very important, but sometimes they can become challenging and unhealthy. With counselling, individuals learn how to navigate difficult relationship situations, set boundaries, increase trust and intimacy, work on self development, reflect on themselves and prioritise their own wellbeing.
