Anxiety Counselling

Anxiety is a natural and healthy response towards dangerous or unpredictable situations with unknown outcomes. Getting nervous when speaking in public, moving to a new city, or starting a new job is completely normal. Anxiety disorders are different in that no real danger or threat is present, yet the person will experience all the physiological and psychological effects associated with being afraid. The feeling mirrors what one may experience when being chased by a wild animal - they may feel threatened and prepare to either fight, freeze or flee. However, instead of it being a dangerous animal, the anxiety is triggered by that social event you have to go to, the poorly organized bookshelf, or looking at your finances. A trained therapist can help you understand, challenge and heal from the unhelpful thoughts, feelings and beliefs that perpetuate the feelings of anxiety.

Kinds of Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are a group of similar mental disorders characterized by persistent and unwarranted feelings of fear, stress, and an impending sense of doom. Anxiety can present itself in many different ways and be triggered by a variety of circumstances. Regardless of the kind of situations that trigger anxiety, therapy can help people develop the resilience and coping skills necessary to overcome any obstacle.

Generalized Anxiety

People with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) constantly anticipate disaster and experience a physiological fear response when faces with triggers, such as money, health, family, work, or other issues.

Social Anxiety

People with social anxiety tend to experience an irrational fear that they are being constantly judged in social settings. Because of this, they may avoid meeting new people or attending social events.

Performance Anxiety

It is characterized by an irrational fear of "failing" at performing a specific task. People with performance anxiety tend to worry about making a mistake or not being able to articulate their point or answer questions .

Test Anxiety

Most commonly observed in children, teenagers and young adults in an academic setting, test anxiety is a specific kind of performance anxiety relating to tests or exams. The individual may experience anxiety before, during and after the exam.

Panic Disorders

Some people with anxiety may experience what’s known as a panic attack, which is a physiological reaction triggered by overwhelming stress. People who experience panic attacks report feelings of suffocation, chest pain, and even dying.

Phobias

A phobia is an excessive and irrational fear of an object, animal or situation. Those who live with a phobia may go out of their way to avoid their triggers, to the point that it interferes with their lives. Common phobias include arachnophobia and claustrophobia.

What is Social Anxiety?

Regardless of whether you live with generalized anxiety, social anxiety or another form, most people report experiencing both psychological and physiological effects, including:
  • Hyperventilation
  • Increased heart rate
  • Excessive sweating

  • Irritability
  • Excessive worrying
