Personality Assessments

Personality is part of the human experience that stands apart from all other aspects of our lives. It affects how we respond to situations and differ from our peers. A personality assessment is a type of psychometric assessment which evaluates the characteristic traits, attitudes, personality traits, beliefs, values, needs, motives, emotional states, coping styles or aspirations of an individual. It gives you a better understanding of yourself, allows you to assess your strengths and weaknesses from a different perspective, and makes an ideal tool for choosing appropriate career options or making decisions based on what is good or bad for you at that moment in time.

When is a Personality Assessment Helpful?

Helpful for Employment Decisions

Personality assessments can give you the insight and guidance you need when making major decisions or trying to fit into new situations. Typically, personality assessments are used by employers looking to hire the best candidate for the job, individuals looking to find the right career path for themselves, and students wishing to determine if their chosen field of study matches their ideal careers. Personality assessment gives you insight into your own personality, which has a significant impact on how you interact with others and make decisions.

Assessing for Personality Disorders

Personality assessment is an in-depth analysis of the person's behaviour and how they interact with others, how they cope with challenges and stress, their likes, dislikes and motivations. The purpose of a personality assessment is to help in identifying a possible diagnosis of personality disorders (PD), which fall into one of three main clusters.

Cluster A

People with Cluster A personality disorders exhibit behaviour that others perceive as strange, unpredictable or erratic. These unusual behaviours lead to social difficulties, isolation and extreme difficulty to form healthy relationships with others. Examples of these disorders include paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorders.

Cluster B

These personality types are characterized by dramatic, erratic or unpredictable mood swings and problematic relationships. They may frequently experience intense periods of anger, depression, or anxiety, while also behaving impulsively or engaging in risky behaviours. This usually includes borderline, histrionic, antisocial and narcissistic personality disorders.

Cluster C

People with cluster C personality disorders are anxious, fearful and dependent on others. They tend to avoid taking risks or making important decisions and need a lot of reassurance from other people. They also can have obsessive-compulsive traits. They include avoidant personality disorder, dependent personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.
