What the Titles Really Mean

Compassionate Counselling and Professional Services

While Registered and Provisional Psychologists may differ in credentials and, at times, experience, each professional on our team is highly trained, supervised, and committed to providing skilled, compassionate care. Every psychologist brings a strong foundation of clinical knowledge and offers support tailored to the unique needs of their clients. When choosing a therapist, titles are just one part of the picture—what matters most is finding someone whose approach and presence feel like the right fit for your personal journey.

What’s the difference and will my insurance cover it?

(Short answer: Yes!)
At our clinic, you may see either a Registered Psychologist or a Provisional Psychologist. Both are highly trained professionals who provide skilled and compassionate support, but their licensing status is different. We understand it can be confusing, especially when you're navigating insurance and trying to find the right fit. Here’s what you need to know:

Registered Psychologist

A Registered Psychologist has met all the requirements to practice independently, including advanced education, extensive supervised clinical training, and successful completion of provincial licensing exams. They are fully licensed by the provincial regulatory body, such as the College of Alberta Psychologists, and are authorized to diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Registered Psychologists can practice without supervision, must adhere to rigorous ethical and professional standards, and are committed to ongoing education. Sessions are covered by most insurance plans.

Registered Provisional Psychologist

A Provisional Psychologist has completed a Master's or Doctoral degree in psychology and is in the final stage of becoming a Registered Psychologist. While they are fully qualified to provide therapy and assessments, they must do so under the active supervision of a Registered Psychologist. Their work is regularly reviewed to ensure it meets the highest standards of ethical, evidence-based care. Provisional Psychologists are often described as thoughtful, dedicated, and passionate about supporting their clients. They are completing supervised clinical hours, engaging in regular consultation with their supervisor, and delivering services grounded in best practices.
Will My Insurance Cover a Provisional Psychologist?
Yes, nearly all insurance plans do. Insurance companies typically cover sessions with a Provisional Psychologist as long as the supervising Registered Psychologist’s name and license number are included on the receipt. We make sure this information is included on every invoice, so your claim is eligible.

Supervision: What Does It Actually Mean?

When you work with a Provisional Psychologist, you’re getting two minds thinking about your care. Your therapist provides the direct support, and behind the scenes, your case is reviewed by a Registered Psychologist who ensures your needs are being met. This collaborative model strengthens care and encourages ongoing learning, reflection, and support.

Why Choose a Provisional Psychologist?

More Accessible

Offering shorter wait times and lower fees, Provisional Psychologists provide care that is both affordable and aligned with the highest standards of ethical and clinical practice.

Collaborative Care

Because their work is supervised, you benefit from the perspective of not just one, but two trained professionals—your therapist and their supervisor—working together to support your goals.

Trained Professional

Provisional Psychologists have completed a Masters as well as clinical training. They are fully qualified to provide therapy with the skills, knowledge, and ethical grounding to support a wide range of mental health needs.

What Matters Most in Your Choice of Psychologist

At the end of the day, what matters most is the quality of care you receive and the connection you have with your psychologist. Whether you’re working with a Registered or Provisional Psychologist, you can trust that you’re in the hands of a skilled, compassionate professional who is committed to your well-being. Every psychologist at our clinic is carefully selected, highly trained, and supported to deliver thoughtful, evidence-based treatment tailored to your needs. Credentials may differ—but our standard of care does not.
