Workplace Depression Counselling

What Is Workplace Depression?

Work can take up a huge part of your life. When your workplace becomes a source of ongoing stress, exhaustion, isolation, conflict, or unhappiness, those feelings do not always disappear when you clock out. Workplace depression can leave you feeling disconnected from a job you once cared about, struggling to concentrate, dreading Mondays, questioning your abilities, or simply trying to make it through each day. Whether work is contributing to your depression or depression is making work harder, counselling can help you understand what is happening and find a healthier way forward.

Counsellors for Workplace Depression

At Grit Psychology, we understand that work can affect your mental health in complicated ways. Sometimes the workplace itself is the problem. Other times, burnout, perfectionism, anxiety, depression, difficult relationships, life changes, or years of pressure can make work feel harder than it used to. Our psychologists can help you understand what is weighing on you, recognize patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and find practical ways to move forward. The goal isn’t to make you more productive. It’s to help you feel better, both at work and in the rest of your life.

What Does Depression at Work Look Like?

Workplace depression does not always look like someone who cannot get out of bed or go to work. Many people continue functioning while struggling internally. You might notice that you are constantly tired, have difficulty concentrating, procrastinate more than usual, make mistakes you normally would not make, or feel overwhelmed by relatively small tasks. You may withdraw from coworkers, stop contributing ideas, lose confidence in your abilities, or feel emotionally numb toward work you once enjoyed.

Signs of Workplace Depression

Workplace depression can make it harder to get through the workday. You may dread going to work, lose motivation, struggle to concentrate, procrastinate, withdraw from coworkers, or feel mentally and physically exhausted. Some people also experience increased irritability, self doubt, trouble sleeping, declining productivity, or anxiety before work. These feelings can follow you home, leaving little energy for relationships, hobbies, or everyday life. Because workplace depression can overlap with burnout, anxiety, and chronic stress, counselling can help you understand what you’re experiencing and what may need to change.

What causes Workplace Depression

Workplace depression does not always have one clear cause. It can develop when ongoing stress, pressure, or difficult experiences at work begin to affect your mental health. Common factors include heavy workloads, unrealistic expectations, lack of support, workplace conflict, bullying, job insecurity, poor work life balance, feeling undervalued, or having little control over your role. Sometimes work is only part of the picture. Burnout, anxiety, perfectionism, relationship stress, major life changes, or existing depression can also make it harder to cope with challenges at work.

Workplace Depression vs. Burnout

Burnout and depression can share many of the same symptoms, but they are not the same. Workplace burnout is typically linked to prolonged job related stress and may leave you feeling emotionally and physically exhausted, disconnected or cynical about your work, and less effective or motivated in your role. Depression tends to extend beyond the workplace and can affect many areas of your life. Symptoms may include persistent sadness or hopelessness, loss of interest or enjoyment, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, feelings of worthlessness, and a lack of motivation that continues even when you are away from work.

When Work Starts Following You Home

One of the hardest parts of workplace depression is that it doesn’t always stop when you leave work. You might find yourself replaying conversations, worrying about what tomorrow will bring, checking emails after hours, or simply feeling too drained to do anything you normally enjoy. You may have less patience or energy for the people you care about, and weekends can start to feel more like recovery time than actual time off.

Eventually, it can feel like work is taking up far more of your life than the hours you spend there. Counselling can help you understand what is weighing on you, set healthier boundaries with work, and make room for the parts of your life that have been pushed aside.

High Functioning Depression at Work

You don’t have to look like you’re struggling to need support. Many people with depression continue to show up, meet deadlines, take care of others, and do well at their jobs, even when they feel exhausted, disconnected, or overwhelmed underneath it all. Being able to keep going doesn’t always mean you’re doing okay. Therapy gives you a private space where you don’t have to keep performing, meet anyone else’s expectations, or pretend everything is fine.

Workplace Depression Counselling at Grit Psychology

Postpartum anxiety and postpartum depression often occur together, but they are not the same condition. Postpartum anxiety is mainly marked by excessive fear and worry: racing thoughts, feeling constantly on edge, and a mind that won't switch off even when your baby is safe. Postpartum depression more often involves persistent sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or emotional numbness. Because the two overlap, you might notice signs of one, the other, or both at once. Postpartum anxiety in particular can go unrecognized because it doesn't always look like sadness. It can show up as irritability, restlessness, or trouble sleeping even when you're exhausted.

When Should I Talk to a Therapist About Depression at Work?

It may be time to talk to a therapist when work begins affecting more than just your workday. If you are struggling to sleep, concentrate, enjoy your time off, maintain relationships, or simply feel like yourself, it is worth paying attention to. You don’t have to wait until you reach a breaking point. Constantly thinking about quitting, crying because of work, feeling numb or overwhelmed, dreading each workday, or spending your time off recovering from your job can all be signs that you could benefit from support.

Frequently Asked Questions About Workplace Depression

Is workplace depression a real condition?

“Workplace depression” is commonly used to describe depression that affects someone at work or symptoms that may be connected to workplace experiences. It is not a separate clinical diagnosis. A psychologist can help determine whether your symptoms may be related to depression, burnout, anxiety, chronic stress, or another concern.

How do I know if my job is making me depressed?

Pay attention to patterns. If your mood consistently worsens before or during work and improves significantly when you are away, your workplace may be contributing to your distress. However, depression can have multiple causes, so therapy can help you explore the full picture.

Can a toxic workplace cause depression?

Chronic exposure to workplace bullying, conflict, excessive demands, insecurity, poor support, or other ongoing stressors can negatively affect mental health and may contribute to depressive symptoms in some people.

Is it depression or burnout?

Burnout is usually closely connected to chronic workplace stress, while depression can affect mood, motivation, energy, enjoyment, sleep, concentration, and other areas of life beyond work. Because symptoms overlap, a mental health professional can help you understand what you are experiencing.

Can I be depressed even if I am still doing well at work?

Yes. Some people continue meeting deadlines and performing well while experiencing significant depressive symptoms privately. Your ability to function does not determine whether your distress deserves support.

Should I quit my job if it is affecting my mental health?

That is a personal decision, and therapy does not have to begin with the assumption that you should stay or leave. Counselling can help you understand what is contributing to your distress, explore possible changes, clarify your priorities, and make a decision that fits your circumstances.

Can therapy help with workplace depression?

Yes. Therapy can help address depressive symptoms while also exploring workplace stress, boundaries, perfectionism, confidence, interpersonal difficulties, burnout, career dissatisfaction, and other factors that may be contributing to how you feel.

What if I cannot stop thinking about work?

Difficulty mentally disconnecting from work can be a sign that stress is spilling into your personal life. Therapy can help you identify triggers, establish boundaries, develop strategies for rumination, and create more psychological separation between work and home.
