Postpartum Anxiety Counselling

What Is Postpartum Anxiety?

We have all heard of postpartum depression, and many of us have heard of postpartum psychosis. But postpartum anxiety, which is just as real and far more common than most people realize, rarely gets the same attention. Postpartum anxiety is an anxiety condition that emerges after childbirth, marked by persistent, hard-to-control worry or fear. It can occur on its own or alongside postpartum depression, and it can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or how many children you have. Unlike everyday worry, which passes once a concern is resolved, postpartum anxiety tends to persist, spike at night, and attach itself to new fears, even when your baby is healthy and safe.

Counsellors for Postpartum Anxiety

Because postpartum anxiety doesn't always look like sadness, it is easy to miss. A postpartum counsellor is trained to recognize the difference between everyday new-parent worry and anxiety that needs support. At Grit Psychology, our counsellors offer a warm, non-judgmental space where you can say the things you haven't felt able to say out loud, including frightening thoughts or the guilt of not enjoying every moment. You don't have to wait until it feels unmanageable to reach out. Talking to a postpartum anxiety counsellor early can help you feel calmer, more confident, and more like yourself.

What Does Postpartum Anxiety Feel Like?

Postpartum anxiety affects your thoughts, emotions, and body. It often shows up as constant worry about your baby, or a persistent fear that something bad will happen, alongside real difficulty relaxing. Racing thoughts and a sense of feeling on edge are common, sometimes escalating into panic attacks. Many parents struggle to sleep even when their baby is asleep, and find themselves feeling overwhelmed, irritable, or unable to concentrate. Seeking constant reassurance, and feeling unable to leave your baby with others, round out a pattern many parents recognize once it's named. Many parents describe feeling like their brain never stops scanning for potential dangers.

Signs You May Be Experiencing Postpartum Anxiety

Common signs include checking on your baby repeatedly, or constantly researching health concerns online. Feeling afraid to leave the house, or avoiding letting others care for your baby, are common too, often paired with overthinking feeding or sleeping routines. Many parents notice a real difficulty trusting themselves, and feel guilty for not enjoying parenthood the way they expected to. Emotional exhaustion, avoiding situations out of fear, and a persistent worry that feels impossible to turn off are all worth paying attention to. These symptoms can vary in intensity and may develop gradually after childbirth.

What Causes Postpartum Anxiety?

There is no single cause of postpartum anxiety. Hormonal changes after childbirth and sleep deprivation are common contributors, alongside previous anxiety or perfectionism. Stressful life events and traumatic birth experiences can play a role too, as can general parenting pressure and a lack of social support. For some parents, previous pregnancy loss, infertility, or having a baby with medical concerns adds an extra layer of anxiety on top of the usual adjustment. The transition into parenthood is one of the biggest life changes many people experience, and it is understandable that it can bring emotional challenges.

Postpartum Anxiety Is Different From Normal Worry

It is normal to think about your baby's safety and wellbeing. Postpartum anxiety becomes more concerning when worries are constant, difficult to control, and begin affecting your ability to sleep, enjoy your baby, make decisions, or carry out daily activities. If anxiety is preventing you from feeling present with your family, professional support can help.

Postpartum Anxiety and Intrusive Thoughts

Many parents with postpartum anxiety experience unwanted intrusive thoughts. These thoughts may be upsetting, frightening, or completely out of character. Having intrusive thoughts does not mean you want to act on them or that you are a bad parent. In fact, people experiencing postpartum anxiety are often deeply distressed by these thoughts because they care so much about their baby's safety. Talking about intrusive thoughts with a psychologist can reduce shame and help you understand why they occur.

Postpartum Anxiety and Postpartum Depression

Postpartum anxiety and postpartum depression often occur together, but they are not the same condition. Postpartum anxiety is mainly marked by excessive fear and worry: racing thoughts, feeling constantly on edge, and a mind that won't switch off even when your baby is safe. Postpartum depression more often involves persistent sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or emotional numbness. Because the two overlap, you might notice signs of one, the other, or both at once. Postpartum anxiety in particular can go unrecognized because it doesn't always look like sadness. It can show up as irritability, restlessness, or trouble sleeping even when you're exhausted.

Anxiety After Pregnancy Loss or Infertility

Parents who have experienced infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, or a previous pregnancy complication often feel heightened anxiety after welcoming a baby. When you have already been through loss or a long wait, it can be hard to trust that this baby is safe, even when they are healthy and thriving. You may find yourself bracing for bad news, feeling guilty for not being able to relax and enjoy this moment, or carrying grief for what came before alongside your love for the baby in your arms. None of this means you are ungrateful. Joy and fear can exist together, and anxiety is a very understandable response to what you've been through.

Postpartum Anxiety Counselling Can Help

At Grit Psychology, we understand that becoming a parent is a profound life transition that can bring both joy and unexpected emotional challenges. Our psychologists provide compassionate, evidence-based counselling for postpartum anxiety, parenting stress, intrusive thoughts, perfectionism, and the emotional adjustment to life after childbirth. Together, we can help you reduce anxiety, build confidence, and experience parenthood with greater calm, connection, and self-compassion.

Frequently Asked Questions About Postpartum Anxiety

What causes postpartum anxiety?

There is no single cause of postpartum anxiety. Hormonal changes and sleep deprivation are common contributors, alongside a history of anxiety or perfectionism, a traumatic birth, pregnancy loss or infertility, limited support, and general parenting pressure. It can happen to anyone, and having it says nothing about your ability as a parent.

Is postpartum anxiety common?

Yes. Fathers, non-birthing parents, partners, and adoptive parents can all experience postpartum anxiety. It often looks different from what people expect, showing up as irritability, overworking, withdrawal, or constant worry about providing for the family rather than visible fear. Because it is so often overlooked, many partners never mention it. Support is available for you too, and reaching out early helps.

Are intrusive thoughts after having a baby normal?

Many new parents experience intrusive thoughts. While they can feel frightening, they are often a symptom of anxiety rather than an indication that you will act on them. A psychologist can help you understand and manage these thoughts.

How do I know if it's normal worry or postpartum anxiety?

Normal worry comes and goes and eases with reassurance. Postpartum anxiety is constant, hard to control, and affects your sleep, decisions, or ability to enjoy your baby. If worry feels impossible to switch off, it's worth talking to a professional.

What is the difference between postpartum anxiety and postpartum depression?

Postpartum anxiety mainly involves excessive fear and worry, while postpartum depression often includes sadness, hopelessness, low mood, and loss of interest. Some people experience both at once.

When does postpartum anxiety start?

It can begin any time in the first year after birth, often in the first weeks or months. Some parents notice it building gradually, and for others it appears suddenly, sometimes after the first few weeks when the initial adrenaline fades.

How long does postpartum anxiety last?

It varies. With support, many parents notice improvement within weeks to months. Without support, symptoms can persist or worsen, which is why early help matters.

Can therapy help with postpartum anxiety?

Yes. Counselling can help reduce anxiety, manage intrusive thoughts, build confidence, strengthen coping skills, and support your adjustment to parenthood.

Does Grit Psychology offer counselling for postpartum anxiety?

Yes. Our psychologists provide compassionate counselling for postpartum anxiety, postpartum depression, parenting stress, intrusive thoughts, birth trauma, and the emotional challenges that can arise after welcoming a new baby.
