How Can Megan Help?

Trauma & PTSD

Megan has completed training in prolonged exposure therapy, allowing her to work with clients, often alongside a psychologist, to complete in vivo exposure therapy (otherwise known as in the community exposure therapy). This involves working with clients to visit locations which are associated or bring up distress in a gradual way to help work through trauma and increase their tolerance of being in these areas.

Depression & Anxiety

Megan has worked with many clients diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or other challenges with their mental health. She assists by providing education, supporting with goal setting and routine-building, and providing tools and coping strategies to help when challenging emotions arise. Megan makes use of some aspects of both Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

Long-COVID

Megan has experience working with long-COVID clients to support them in their recovery, returning to work and to life, and to help them make the most of their ability to maintain their quality of life, as much as possible. This includes discussions about energy conservation, strategies to help support challenges with memory or attention, assistance with exposures to public places, and other support with symptoms resulting from long-COVID.

Concussion

Megan currently works from Tuesday to Friday at the CBI Health Calgary Chinook Clinic, which specializes in rehabilitation and recovery following a concussion. From an occupational therapy perspective, Megan provides education and guidance on how to best manage symptoms while emphasizing a gradual return to all activities and environments.

Home Assessments

Megan has experience completing a variety of home assessments, primarily for WCB, but also for other insurance providers. This includes the following: Home Equipment Assessments, Housekeeping and Home Maintenance Independence Assessments, Personal Care Allowance Assessments, Ergonomic Assessments, and General OT Assessments.

Approaches & Modalities

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)

Megan received training in Prolonged Exposure Therapy in February 2021. PE facilitates her ability to support clients in working through trauma and complete what is called in vivo exposure therapy. This involves working with clients to visit locations which are associated or bring up distress in a gradual way to help work through trauma and increase their tolerance of being in these areas.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Megan has completed some training in ACT and continues to work to incorporate more of this in her practice, helping clients to identify their values, acknowledge their emotions, and work towards what they desire in life. This can be helpful with any client with challenges with their mental health, including but not limited to those who struggle with depression, anxiety, and/or trauma.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Megan has completed some training in CBT and makes use of it when appropriate with clients, including but not limited to those who struggle with depression, anxiety, and/or trauma. CBT involves increasing one’s awareness of their thinking patterns and biases, working to change some of these thoughts, and testing out new behaviours to link to these new ways of thinking.
